So this lady at work, Terri, went to a Young Adult workshop type thing and she recently discovered ZINES. She said after she went to the workshop for zines she got really fired up and wants to write one about being a grandma and stuff. But most importantly, I think her and I are going to try and have a 'zine library' type thing in this dusty ol' northland-er library of ours.
Any help/suggestions? She mentioned wanting to have a class also , and I know somewhat of a 72 hour zine making thing or something along those lines.
I'm really excited about work now

Oh man Select Your Order 2 is gonna be out soon and now that I write/edit/organize everything it'll probably be stuff that was supposed to be in the first issue but wasn't. I don't know if you got a copy of that, but there was a mix up and some editorial I wrote for some Oak Park music thing got sent in there. It was so stupid sounding.

That's really exciting! I wish I had gone to that zine / YA workshop too (they offered it to KC MO and MidContinent staff) but I couldn't at the time. I've been wanting to start something like that in my library system for a while, but haven't had enough support really. Let me know how it goes for you. If it goes well, maybe my library will believe how awesome that would be and let us do one. You know... for the kids?

"eh" to that. that's like saying the internet is the new books. frankly, any statement made in the format "_______ is the new _______" is a statement i have very little patience with.
off with you!

But "Extras" is the new "Seinfeld" and "NYPD Blue" reruns are the new" Homicide: Life on the Street" reruns to me.
I don't understand what you young ones have against the good old TV. I guess it's just something you have to be mature to understand.

the internet is awesome! for real! i have a little love affair going on with the printed page, that's all, but i pretty much get all of my news online too. i read nytimes.com and many more, but i sneak in a little newspaper action on the side, ya feel me?
zines are just cooler than blogs, that's all i'm sayin'!
but if "former newspaper guy" and "former zine guy" has any affiliations with a certain weblog that i won't name here, he should know that i read it pretty often and i think it's great. so there!

i do have a soft spot for zines. its a great medium, and there is def something fun about producing something you can literally hand to people. back when i did my zine id get all these people talk about reading it at blah blah blah and me thinking it was cool that i somehow accompanied them on their plane ride or at the laundromat. very fun. the advantages of blogs to me are #1 its immediate, #2 its free and unlimited, #3 is dynamic, the cons are that its limited to a computer screen, cant be as artistic, and no physical presence. i guess what im trying to say is its awesome to do either!

Computers over zines, unless all of the paper is recycled.
It's not like most zines are incredibly profound or have enough deep messages to be worth the waste of natural resources.
