kevin i could give you more advice on this than you could ever possibly want to hear. i would say london, or maybe edinburgh in scotland. they're big cities but not big enough that you can't carve your own niche. london has the most amazing fresh produce markets and it's a surpisingly social city. paris seems much less accessible, especially for an anglophone and an american. where would you be studying in ireland?

i didn't like london too much but it would probably be easiest language-wise. paris is great but you need to know at least mildly functional french to get by. most often if you attempt to speak in french first people are more than willing to meeet you ahlf way and speak in broken english. but if you go english right out of the gate people pretend they don't understand and won't even try. at least that was my experience over and over.
i do have to not that when i was in london i had a hell of a time trying to understand people at a lot of places, cockney maybe? i had to have this guy at a record store write down the nae of this street i was looking for becasue i couldn't understand a word he was saying and felt like a major ass. but the open air market in notting hill rules and has great record stores. the brittish museum was great too i went two or three times. but be forewarned the english wouldn't know how to make a decent cup of coffee if their lives depended on it. if you go there i hope you like tea.
never been to ireland or scotland, though i hear they're great. but i always hear the language is an even crazier departure from joe schoe american english.
