ok. i always thought heroin was just a punk band. does that mean rorshach is a screamo band? where the hell did "screamo" come from? is it purely a sound thing or is it like a "scene"? because heroin and rorshach were playing with born against and infest and final conflict and even insted. and where is the connection between heroin and from autumn to ashes? i'm just confused as hell about what screamo is.

You hear a lot of people saying it's a scene that is restricted to San Diego and those bands from the mid to late 90's. Then again, there are screamo sounding bands from all over and the combo of post-punk and hardcore (effectively combined to create some sort of "emo") goes all the way back to late-era Middle Class, Husker Du, and others.

how about we do away with "screamo" and just let it be "punk" or better yet, "good bands" and "bad bands" because i don't know if i'm ready to give up swing kids to something not called "punk"

i think that there is definitely a sound, though hard to describe, that can be classifed as screamo. i've always heard that screamo started with HEROIN. just because RORSCHACH and HEROIN were playing shows together, doesn't mean that they were from the same subgenre. do you have a problem with people saying INSTED was "posi-core"?
i think that hardcore in the 80s and early 90s lacked alot of the rules that it has today. bands were more free to develop their own sound and things were just punk, unlike today where if you like MAN IS THE BASTARD then you can't like MENTAL.
if a band like MOSS ICON or THE HATED came along today, it'd be disregarded as just some emo garbage, but back then people just saw those bands as hardcore or punk.
i really don't know what i'm rambling about. i guess i just want to reiterate that when screamo is done right, it's good. i kind of feel the same way about screamo as i do grindcore. depending on the band, it's either really good, or really bad.
