I'm with Laz an AR here. I think everything since Axl Rose sucks, but I stopped judging the decisions people make for themselves. The idea of a "sellout" is over. Furthermore, most of their "punk" fans stopped caring after they left No Idea, so who are they really abandoning anyway? I'm tremendously anti-major, but i got over the idea that what I would do with my band is what everyone else should do with their band. The debate about making money with your art is the same thing. Was Rembrandt not an "artist" because people would comission him to paint them so he could eat?

I don't think there's any "punk code" of living... And of course everyone has the freedom to do whatever they want...
But peoples' actions should always bring about a reaction. This isn't a big deal (at least I never thought it was), but it is, in my opinion, a really shitty move on the bands' part. It's not a band's job to make everyone happy or to solve any problems, but if you're part of the underground (which I guess they weren't after signing to Fat, anyway), isn't it just repayment to the people who believed in what you said and your music to not join up with suits who are alligned with weapons manufacturers? I'm not for the public castration of Against Me, but I can understand why their fans could be dissapointed. This whole thing is kind of a symbol of how almost ANYTHING can be bought...
I guess it depends what you think "the underground" is, though (ugh, I fucking hate that word).

I think at this point: everyone in obscure and underground punk rock and anarchist culture has been served quite nicely by Against me. For anyone that can really admit that they've enjoyed them and sang along rocked out blah blah: They've done all they can. There is nothing more they can do for us. When they signed to sire, what kind of opportunities did they open up? Sure, they sold out if you think of it that way. They are going to be sucked up into the mainstream and we'll never care about them again. Right? What about all those 13 year old redneck kids whose only exposure to punk is through mtv and the radio? What about all those rich kids in uptight sheltered communities who probably won't even go out to house shows or punk clubs downtown? One of the things nation of ulysses, for instance, talked about was using the mainstream culture and exploiting it to THEIR advantage. You have to use your resources available to get your point across. What's the worst that could happen with against me going to a major label? They could fade out to obscurity. They could become a ginormous selling rock band who makes lots of money, does lots of drugs, and has sex with chicks every night while on tour with the bloodhound gang (eh will meek?). They could get a lot of kids interested in something they would never otherwise find out about. If it doesn't work... Who cares?! It's going to change some kids life somewhere. Where would I be without the mighty mighty bosstones? shit... fuck... i don't wanna think about it. (and aren't they just god awful?). If you wanna know what i say... I say make it or break it. Sure they could just break up. That would be great too; kill something you love ya know? Or they could keep going doing something they love and are getting paid massive amounts of money for while somehow getting kids interested in their earlier material and anything they can get their filthy little hands on simply by its association with AM! (literally and figuratively).
How does this affect anyone who his wholeheartedly concerned with punk rock and anarchist culture? It doesn't.
anyways, I'm kinda drunk... hope some of this makes sense.

honestly i doubt they will release more than two albums on a major before they burn out and fade off into the unknown. if they prove me wrong then, good for them, but i still think they are awful and i could give two shits about what they do.
